META: A read-only website that I use for documentation as a systems administrator. Feel free to reference pages but keep in mind I have comments turned off and only really use this site as documentation to search through for troubleshooting or when I learn something new and want to “show it off”. That being said, if you see something totally inaccurate or see I’m totally overlooking something, feel free to message me at: admin at gerrywilliams dot net.
Documentation is one of the strongest tools in the System Administrator’s tool belt. I created this website as a place to store notes while working as a Sys Admin. It started off for break/fix type issues that help out when you start at help desk and have since continued to use it for documentation on issues that I fix as my career progresses.
One of the best things I have learned is that you need to take notes DURING a system change or while reading the manuals for various technologies. If you do the migration, upgrade, or installation and then take notes later, you are likely to miss a few steps.
The goal of this site is not to break every task into a series of steps, but rather a general guideline on how to fix common IT issues so the wording my sound off. My template is fairly straightforward:
Description of the issue
1. Sequential steps you can take to resolve.
2. Step two with CodeBlock example:
# Downloads my latest Github Modules
$URI = "https://api.github.com/repos/gerryw1389/master/releases/latest"
# Prevent "Invoke-RestMethod : The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel."
# This is because Powershell uses 1.0 and most sites require 1.2
[Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol = "Tls12, Tls11, Tls, Ssl3"
$Response = Invoke-RestMethod -Method Get -Uri $URI
$ZipUrl = $Response.zipball_url
# Download the file to the current location
$OutputPath = "$((Get-Location).Path)\$($Response.name.Replace(" ","-")).zip"
Invoke-RestMethod -Method Get -Uri $ZipUrl -OutFile $OutputPath
Pages I used as a reference. Sometimes my steps are copied directly from the reference. There is no reason to re-invent the wheel.
I don’t place ads on the site to make money nor do I claim any copied work as my own but if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please email me at: admin at gerrywilliams dot net.
